How to be a good reader on Medium

I have been writing on Medium since the early days. I’ve seen various innovations come and go. I continue to like the platform because it is clean, simple, and easy to use.

There are plenty of articles out there generally on how to be a writer, and specifically how to write on Medium. The platform is now much more sophisticated, with many peripheral services built around it to support writers.

People write here for a number of reasons but mainly they write to be read, and to be paid (though not everyone cares about being paid).

In the early days of Medium, it was easy to get work noticed. Now, I believe, Medium receives around 20,000 new articles per day, so it has become increasingly hard to stand out. Here’s where readers can help.

Writing is an effort, even for those of us who love it. It is one of the creative arts, and like any art-form it is both a calling and a service. Like any art, the nicest thing about writing is when people appreciate your work. On Medium that appreciation is shown by people sharing work, commenting on it, and clapping for it.
