What to read in order to understand Covid-19
It feels like I am standing on a beach, and on the horizon I can see a tsunami. Sirens are wailing, we are meant to do something, but I know it’s coming way faster than I can run, so there’s nothing I can do. I just stand there, watch it coming, and wait for it to engulf me.
That is how I’m sure many people feel about Coronavirus, Covid-19. We are told it is a pandemic. It is spreading exponentially, so numbers will explode in a very short time. We are told that up to 80% of the population will catch it. There is no immunity, no defence, no cure. Wash your hands. That’s it. The only advice is to wash your hands. We should self-isolate — sit indoors for months, alone, avoiding people, not working. How is that even possible in our societies. For a week maybe, but in the UK the virus is expected to peak in 10–14 weeks.
My Social Media feeds are just Coronavirus now. I never thought I’d yearn for a video of a kitten being funny, or some dumb meme about Brexit or Trump. Every media outlet is riding the wave, churning out stuff on the virus, vying for our attention, trying to come up with a more intelligent, or more alarming article. The noise is now so loud it is impossible to hear the message.
No wonder people are panicking. I am seeing for real people panic buying, actual food shortages, people on public transit with…
