Why Jeremy Corbyn holds the key to Brexit

The biggest obstacle to solving Brexit is Jeremy Corbyn. I take it as given that Theresa May and her cabinet are the worst government in living memory. The bigger question is why Labour is not massively ahead in the polls. The reason May carries on destroying the country, and her party, is that so few people consider Corbyn’s Labour party a viable alternative. The Conservatives have been able to field such a second rate prime minister and third rate cabinet because they have effectively ruled unopposed for so long.

Labour — everyone in Labour — should be in shock that Corbyn and his party are failing so badly to make inroads electorally. I know die-hard Conservatives who are saying openly that they would consider voting Labour in a general election if it had a reasonable, centrist leader. The tragedy for the country, and for the Labour party, is that Jeremy Corbyn remains the Labour leader. Life-long Labour supporters struggle to vote for him, let alone disaffected Conservatives.

Right now, the only thing that could really resolve Brexit is a general election fought between a Leave and a Remain party. It would require cancelling Brexit, with the promise of an election fought on Brexit. The outcome would actually be a mandate, with full legal and moral weight.
